Degree Apprenticeships Experience
This website/blog is here to open your eyes to Degree Apprenticeship. I’ve spoken to people around me, and the most common question seems to be “what actually is it?”
I’m planning to give a rundown on what it is, why I’ve chosen it and why you may want to consider it as an option. I will also be blogging about my experience to help you choose this option and give some tips and tricks along the way!
What is it?
A degree apprenticeship effectively goes to university whilst working full time to achieve a bachelor’s degree or even a master. Where I was in education, the schools push that your only option is a university and the ‘dumb ones’ take on apprenticeships in construction, and this pains me to write over its blatant stupidity. Schools’ statistics show the percentage of people who went on further to university and I feel that is why they install it into you that this is the only route.
Who can do them?
Anybody! I had a year out of education before I realised this was something I wanted to do, but I am on a course with such a variety of demographics, from literally 18 to 50! it doesn’t matter what part of your career you’re in, you could be doing one if it suits you (and your company…).
What do you need?
I’m sure your thinking “but I will need good grades to do this won’t I?” and I’m afraid you’re slightly wrong. If you’re fresh out of school and looking to go into this, however, it will be easier if you do have them, but if you are working and have been for over a year these degree apprenticeships take into consideration your working ability and experience. all that is needed officially are core subjects such as English and maths- and if you haven’t got them, they can run them the university may help with the course for the first couple of semesters to get them.
I had English and maths along with a C, E and Merit which would not have got me onto the course, but as I have had experience in projects throughout my working career, they considered that and gave me the place. They did specifically ask if I could do “academic writing” to which I enthusiastically replied, ‘of course I can!’ – so from the day of the interview to starting date I researched the life out of it and practised until I was ready.
It can’t be that easy, can it?
Well, no, I found the hardest part of getting on the course was finding how to apply, first, you need to find a willing company to have you on the course, I was lucky as the business I had worked at for years was willing to change my role and employ me to do it. Then you must get through the application process with the university, which entails an interview (or two).
